The historic rivalry between China and Japan, the source of two wars since the late 19th century and the catalyst for the wider war in the Pacific, is once again a matter of growing concern to scholars and policy makers. Why does the past continue to shape the present relationship between these two Asian powers? And can they build a new, more forward-looking, relationship?
