The Glasses are Here!

Students at Baini Jing Primary School could hardly wait to try on their new glasses

On Oct. 29th, I participated in the REAP/OneSight project in Yulin. Our main mission this time was to distribute 39 pairs of glasses to students from two primary schools. The group of Cai Yonghua and REAP’s Ma Xiaochen left from Yulin at 7:00am in the morning. After around 4 hours of driving, we reached Dingbian County at 11:00am. Dingbian is around one hour and 20 minutes of driving from our first stop, Baini Jing Primary School. At around 1 o’clock, the local volunteers, optometrists, and us arrived at Baini Jing Primary School.

The students who received our announcement earlier excitedly lined up and waited for us to hand out their custom-fitted glasses. We educated those children about the benefits of wearing glasses, and the things that they should pay attention to when wearing glasses. Our group was extremely glad to see the excitement and anxiety on the children’s faces. After we had the students try on their glasses and helped them make adjustments, the children were all very happy and kept talking about how much clearer everything looked. This time, 11 children were not able to receive their glasses because their eyes needed further tests. We sent out notifications to their parents to inform them on future steps. On Oct. 30th at around 7:00am, we left for our second stop, Anbian Second Primary School. We distributed 13 pairs of glasses at this school and explained the benefits of wearing glasses to the parents.

During our trip this time, we sample tested 4 classes and the rate of myopia was around 25%. However, many children never had their eyes tested, and the parents weren’t aware of the children’s myopia or amblyopia. Even though this trip was only 2 days long and our help to the children was limited, we were happy to help those children in need with our efforts. As the old saying goes, "Eyes are a window to the soul," and we hope that these children can better experience the beauty of this world by putting on glasses and seeing the world more clearly.

We are very grateful that our company organized this event, and we would like to thank Tracy Mi’s coordination and arrangement throughout this activity.

I have high hopes that we can all participate in more opportunities like this in the future to help others, and do something meaningful in our lives.
