Xiaoyu hopes to help other children with myopia in the future

It was my first business trip by plane since I joined Luxottica 15 years ago, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to do something meaningful for kids in need. To urban children, eyeglasses are so common that they barely notice how important they are. However, to children living deep in the rural countryside, glasses are very mysterious and rare. 

“I will use this chance to do even better in school so I can get a good job and buy glasses for all the children who need them in my village!”

The moment that left the deepest impression on me during the trip was when we visited a family with five people living in a simple hut. The father is a migrant worker in a different province, and the mother was taking care of the three children at home at the time. They did not have much, but understood that sending their children to school could change everything. This is why every spare penny goes to support their children’s education.

When we gave their oldest daughter, Xiaoyu, a new pair of eyeglasses, the daughter burst into tears and said, “I will use this chance to do even better in school so I can get a good job and buy glasses for all the children who need them in my village!”

This was such an unforgettable experience. Her tenacity and selflessness serves as a model for us all!
